What Exactly Do Christians Believe?
A Christian is a person who has entrust his or her soul to the care of Jesus Christ, the God–man, and has been baptized with water in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Ultimately, the Christian life is about a loving relationship with God; it is Jesus who saves, not a system of knowledge. If you believe in the theology without loving God, then you are lost.
The Apostle Paul wrote,
I may have the gift of prophecy. I may understand all the secret things of God and have all
knowledge, and I may have faith so great I can move mountains. But even with all these
things, if I do not have love, then I am nothing. [1 Corinthians 13:2, NCV]
Nevertheless, without the correct doctrine, all the belief in the world will be for naught. The devil loves ambiguity concerning God. The ancient Church Fathers recognized this, and strove for centuries to close the door that aided heretics in their claim that they were true Christians.
While struggling against the Arians (i.e., ancient Jehovah's Witnesses), St. Athanasius noted,
What is at stake is not just a theological theory, but people's salvation.
So, for the sake of grounding and clarity: what kind of Jesus is it to whom we Christians (i.e., God's Chosen People) have entrusted our souls? Is it the same Jesus as the Mormons, or the Jehovah's Witnesses, or the United Pentecostal Church? All of these cults claim to follow the Jesus of the Bible. What specific beliefs separate Christians from cultists?
The three Ecumenical Creeds contain the beliefs of all true Christians:
The Apostles' Creed
I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day He rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
From thence He will come to judge both the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy Christian Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
The Nicene Creed
I believe in one God,
the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth
and of all things visible and invisible.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the only-begotten Son of God,
begotten of His Father before all worlds,
God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God,
begotten, not made,
being of one substance with the Father,
by whom all things were made;
who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven
and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary
and was made man;
and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate.
He suffered and was buried.
And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures
and ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of the Father.
And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead,
whose kingdom will have no end.
And I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord and giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified,
who spoke by the prophets.
And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church,
I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins,
and I look for the resurrection of the dead
and the life of the world to come. Amen.
The Athanasian Creed
Whoever desires to be saved must, above all, cling to the universal Christian faith.
Whoever does not keep it whole and undefiled will, without doubt, perish eternally.
Now this is the universal Christian faith:
We worship one God in Trinity and the Trinity in Unity, neither confusing the persons nor dividing the substance.
For the Father is one person, the Son is another, and the Holy Spirit is still another.
But the Godhead of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit is one: the glory equal and the majesty coeternal.
What the Father is, the Son is, and so is the Holy Spirit.
The Father is uncreated; the Son is uncreated; the Holy Spirit is uncreated.
The Father is infinite; the Son is infinite; the Holy Spirit is infinite.
The Father is eternal; the Son is eternal; the Holy Spirit is eternal.
And yet there are not three Eternal Beings, but one who is Eternal, just as there are not three Uncreated or Infinite Beings, but one who is Uncreated and Infinite.
In the same way, the Father is almighty; the Son is almighty; the Holy Spirit is almighty
And yet there are not three Almighty Beings, but one who is Almighty.
Thus the Father is God; the Son is God; the Holy Spirit is God.
And yet there are not three Gods, but one God.
Thus the Father is Lord; the Son is Lord; the Holy Spirit is Lord.
And yet there are not three Lords, but one Lord.
Just as Christian truth compels us to acknowledge each distinct person as God and Lord, so also Christian faith forbids us to say that there are three Gods or Lords.
The Father was neither made nor created nor begotten by anyone.
The Son was neither made nor created, but was alone begotten of the Father.
The Holy Spirit was neither made nor created nor begotten, but is proceeding from the Father and the Son.
Thus there is one Father, not three Fathers; there is one Son, not three Sons; there is one Holy Spirit, not three Holy Spirits.
And in this Trinity none is before or after another; none is greater or less than another;
but all three persons are coeternal and coequal with each other, so that in all things, as has been stated above, the Trinity in Unity and the Unity in Trinity is to be worshiped.
Whoever desires to be saved must think in this way about the Trinity.
It is also necessary for eternal salvation that one faithfully believe in the incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ.
For this is the true faith that we believe and confess: that our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is at the same time both God and man.
He is God, begotten before all ages from the substance of the Father; and He is man, born into this age from the substance of His mother—existing fully as God and fully as man, with a rational soul and a human body;
He is equal to the Father with respect to His divinity, but subordinate to the Father with respect to His humanity.
Although He is God and man, He is not divided, but is one Christ.
He is united because God has taken humanity into Himself; God does not transform divinity into humanity.
He is completely one in the unity of his person, without confusing his natures.
For as the rational soul and body is one person, so God and man is one Christ.
He suffered death for our salvation.
He descended into hell and rose on the third day from the dead.
He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
At His coming all people will rise bodily to give an account of their own deeds.
Those who have done good will enter eternal life;
those who have done evil will enter eternal fire.
This is the universal Christian faith; one cannot be saved without believing this firmly and faithfully.
